Project Status

Site Selection

Part of the process for the building of a new school involves a site selection process. To lead the process, a Site Selection Committee (SSC) is formed and the committee identifies three possible locations for construction of a new school. These locations are presented in a report to the Governing Board for approval and submission to the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (EECD).

The SSC submitted its report to the Governing Board in June 2014. To review the SSC report, click here. The HRSB approved the recommendations and forwarded them to the provincial government.

On September 17, 2015, the Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development announced the new school will be built on the existing property of the school. To read the news release, click here.

School Steering Team (SST)

The School Steering Team serves an advisory role in the design of the school. The committee will be asked to provide input to the provincial government for consideration during the design process for the new school. Final decisions on the design of the school rests with the provincial government, as represented by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, and the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal.

Relocation of Students

In September 2015, the Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development announced the new elementary school would be built on the existing property of the school. To facilitate this construction, students and staff would be required to vacate the property at the conclusion of the school year in June 2016.

In December 2015, the HRSB Superintendent informed parents that all LMST students would be relocated across the street to the former Beaufort Building and the Beaufort Annex for September 2016. Some renovations to the Beaufort building will occur during the summer to ensure the building is converted back to an elementary school.

School Name

In the procedures for the HRCE's Naming or Renaming Schools policy, an existing school may be renamed for a variety of reasons including, but not limited to:

  • amalgamation of schools;
  • school replacement;
  • development of new identity for the school.

In April 2017,  the LMST School Advisory Council conducted a survey of the school community asking whether or not they wanted the school name to remain LeMarchant-St. Thomas when the new school opened.

A large majority (88%) of returned surveys expressed a wish to retain the existing name.

The new school will be named LeMarchant-St. Thomas Elementary.
