School Review Process

The Halifax Regional School Board has initiated the school review process for most schools within the Auburn Drive and Cole Harbour District High Families of Schools. For information specific to this review, click on the link below:

In October 2014, the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development introduced a new school review policy. The policy describes the process to be followed by a school board when the permanent closure of a public school is a possibility. The process places an emphasis on public engagement and collaboration. The HRSB will comply with all aspects of this policy, including Appendix B: Guidelines and Criteria for a Hub School Model to Guide the Use of Space, when considering proposals for a Hub School Model. Proponents will be required to follow the same document when preparing Hub School proposals.

The starting point for any school review process is a document known as the Long-Range Outlook (LRO). The LRO, which is updated annually, presents information to the public about the current and developing situation of their schools and the delivery of education programs and services. It provides both the school board and the community with an opportunity to discuss the future of education delivery for a group of schools.

On August 31, 2016, staff presented the governing board with a proposed updated LRO action plan that listed areas to be reviewed over the next five years. Click here to view this report.

Community Input

When a school board initiates a review, a committee is formed, known as the school options committee (SOC). The SOC is tasked with studying the issue, reviewing the data and providing their best advice to the school board on how to move forward.

The committee uses its collective expertise to involve and integrate the community, so to propose solutions responding to their mandate. There are multiple opportunities for the community to get involved, including at three public meetings. The recommendations of the SOC are shaped by the engagement and input of the community.
