What do you want to do with the rest of your life? That's one of the toughest decisions you'll have to make after graduating from high school. Your guidance counsellor can help you figure out the right path to take.

Many students choose to go to one of the province's 10 universities to earn an undergraduate degree that can lead to a rewarding and well-paid professional career.

That's not for everyone, though, and there are other choices. For example, the Nova Scotia Community College offers more than 120 programs at 13 campuses across the province, with more than 10,000 full-time students.

You can earn a certificate, diploma, and advanced diploma programs in  five academic schools — Access, Business, IT & Creative Industries, Health & Human Services, and Trades & Technology.

Graduates usually have no trouble finding a job. In fact, in the NSCC’s annual survey of its graduates, the College found 88% are employed, most in their field of choice, with 90% of those employed living and working in Nova Scotia.

Another option is apprenticeship programs, offering 55 designated trades. You could learn to become a chef, a bricklayer, a plumber or a webpage designer.

Apprenticeship is an agreement among an apprentice, an employer and the government of Nova Scotia in which the apprentice works for the employer in exchange for extensive supervised, on-the-job experience and technical training. Theoretical education is also offered online or in the classroom.

More than 40 per cent of new jobs will be in the skilled trades and technologies over the next 20 years.
