Background

Below is an outline of some of the processes that occur from the time a project is announced until completion:

Site Selection

The school site selection process was changed in 2019. Click here to read about these changes.

The siting of the new JL Ilsley was completed under a previous process that involved the formation of a Site Selection Committee (SSC). Under this process, the SSC identified up to three possible locations for construction of a new school. These locations were then presented in a report to the Governing Board for approval and submission to the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (EECD).

  • The SSC for the new JL Ilsley held their first meeting on May 2, 2017.

  • A community engagement session was held on June 6, 2017.

  • The SSC submitted its report to the Governing Board in July 2017. To review the SSC report, click here.

At a Special Board Meeting on July 12, 2017, the Governing Board approved the recommendations of the SSC and have submitted them to the provincial government for a final decision. To view a map of the three sites, click here

SSC Minutes

SSC minutes were approved at the next meeting and are then posted to this site shortly thereafter. For example, minutes from the May 2 SSC meeting were approved at the May 9 meeting.

Presentation

  • June 6 (The SSC held a community engagement session on June 6, 2017)

School Steering Team (SST)

The School Steering Team serves an advisory role in the construction of the school. The committee provides input to the provincial government for consideration during the design process for the new school. Final decisions on the design of the school rests with the provincial government, as represented by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, and the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal.

SST Minutes

The SST held its first meeting on November 26, 2019. Minutes will be posted upon approval of the committee.

School Name

The new school will continue to be named JL Ilsley High School. Click here to read a letter from the Regional Executive Director to the community.

Naming a new school facility is the responsibility of the HRCE. In accordance with the Naming School Facilities policy, the principal (or designate) will identify and lead a consultation process to name the school.

The process will include a school organization such as a School Advisory Council, Parent/Teacher Association, School Steering Team and the public. Also, student input, appropriate for the age level served by the school should be a significant part of the process.

Consultation

A consultation was held on May 7, 2019 with School Advisory Council chairs and principals within the JL Ilsley Family of Schools. The purpose was to provide an update on the construction project, the advantages/benefits of moving to a 9-12 grade configuration and to gather feedback to the following questions:

  • Where are the opportunities for input to decision-making in the future changes within the JL Ilsey Family of Schools?  In those cases, how do we best engage the SACs/community?

  • What else do you need the HRCE to know about how to best transition students and families to the new 9-12 high school moving forward?
