Melinda Daye Appointed HRSB Chair

Melinda Daye is the new chair of the Halifax Regional School Board. Ms. Daye, who is the HRSB’s African Nova Scotian representative, was appointed by the Governor in Council today.

"I am very appreciative for the confidence Minister Casey has placed in me," said Ms. Daye. "I look forward to working with my fellow board members and the superintendent to support the efforts of our teachers and support staff to provide all students with a quality education every day."

In accordance with the Education Act and HRSB by-laws, the Governor-in-Council was asked to appoint a new chair after a majority of governing board members could not agree on the choice of chair on November 26.

A retired teacher and administrator, Ms. Daye's was first elected to the HRSB in October 2012. Her appointment is effective immediately and will continue until next November when members will hold an internal election.

The Halifax Regional School Board serves approximately 48,000 students in 137 schools through the Halifax Regional Municipality.
