Crosswalk Safety Awareness Day is November 4

October 28, 2015

Crosswalk safety has been an increasing concern in HRM over the past few years, both for our students and all residents. Efforts to address the issue include the creation of a Crosswalk Safety Advisory Committee from which tangible improvements, e.g. zebra markings, crosswalk flags have been implemented. Another of the recommendations is a Crosswalk Safety Advisory Day, a day to focus on crosswalk safety. The first Crosswalk Safety Awareness Day was held in 2014 with the second scheduled for Wednesday, November 4.

Perhaps the most significant aspect of the day is the presence of Crosswalk Teams at various crosswalks throughout HRM next Wednesday morning. Waving signs and passing out education handouts, decals etc. The goal is to have drivers and pedestrians become more aware of crosswalks and related safety.

Volunteers Needed

While last year was a good start it is hoped the number of teams and therefore the visibility this year will be at least double that of last year. This is where you can get involved and help. If you are available and would like to be involved in this worthwhile cause we would like you to volunteer as a Crosswalk Captain.  As a Captain you will hopefully recruit a few other team members and then be at a crosswalk of your choosing from 8:30 am to 9:30 am the morning of November 4. That’s it – one hour.  As well, but optional, there will be an event at Grand Parade from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm that you are welcome to attend.

Help us make our communities safer.  Please consider volunteering to be a Crosswalk Captain on November 4.

To do so please contact Kim Carver at carverk@halifax.ca .
