Over the weekend, in my role as spokesperson for the Halifax Regional Centre for Education, I made some comments in media interviews about a violent incident involving some of our students.
I received feedback that one of my comments was hurtful to the disability community. I spoke this morning with a community champion, to listen and to learn.
I want to take a moment to apologize. Language was used that is outdated and I clearly see, upon reflection, that in attempting to clarify inaccuracies being reported on social media my phrasing was hurtful to those living with a disability, as well as their friends and family.
This was not my intention, but lack of intent does not negate impact.
I am grateful this was brought to my attention. I will learn from it and do better next time.
An inclusive school system is one where all students feel accepted, safe, and valued. My comments should not diminish the amazing work being undertaken everyday by thousands of employees to support the well-being and achievement of every student.
