Self-Directed Learning Overview

Looking for something different?
Consider self-directed learning at Broad Street!

The new high school on Broad Street will provide an exciting opportunity to choose a new way of learning. Students will get the chance to learn and do their schoolwork in a flexible environment. You'll have more freedom to work in a way that best meets your needs. You'll develop new self-management skills that will lead you to success!

HOW WILL IT WORK?

Students in Grades 10 to 12 will have a mix of set (traditional) class and flexible time in their schedules. Provincial curriculum and the course selection process will be the same. As students move through the high school years, flexible time will increase to help students prioritize their learning needs. Grade 9 will have a traditional schedule with time dedicated to preparing students for self-directed learning in Grade 10.

HOW WILL THE FLEXIBILITY HELP ME?

Doing well in English, but need to spend more time on math? Now you can! The self-directed learning model allows for more time to work on the subjects and skills that need more attention. As well, it opens up time to access teachers, additional support staff and options for the collaborative spaces you choose to work.

HOW WILL STUDENTS STAY ON TRACK?

A Teacher Advisor (TA) will be your go-to resource. This teacher works with a group of multi-grade students, acting as an advocate and main contact for students and their families. Being assigned to the same TA throughout high school supports the development of meaningful and impactful relationships. TAs stay informed on each of their student's progress in all courses. You will have regular one-on-one time with your TA, too!

WHAT DOES A SCHOOL DAY LOOK LIKE?

You’ll start the day with scheduled TA group time. Here you’ll plan your day and learn the skills to become a successful self-directed learner. Your TA will help to make sure you’re meeting your goals.

Once you have a plan, you’ll proceed with your morning. You’ll attend classes when scheduled. During your flexible time, you’ll work in open areas where teachers will be available to provide guidance as you complete your assignments.

You’ll meet with your TA group again after lunch. You’ll review what you accomplished during the morning and make any necessary changes to your plan to make sure you’re on track to meet the day’s goals.

WHY CHOOSE SELF-DIRECTED LEARNING?

It’s an exciting opportunity to be a part of a new approach to learning in Nova Scotia! This way of learning will help you understand and anticipate your own needs and set you up with the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed for post-secondary pursuits, as well as future employment.
