Elwin_LeRouxHRSB_OfficialDECEMBER2013SuperintendentstotheHalifaxRegionalSchoolBoardProvidingahighqualityeducationforeverystudenteverydayWeDayInspiresHRSBStudentswww.hrsb.ca33SpectacleLakeDriveDartmouthNSB3B1X7902.464.2000LastdayofclassesbeforeChristmasBreakSchoolsReopenContinuousSchoolImprovementMeetingwithPrincipalsRegularBoardMeetingDecember20January6January9January22ImportantDatesMorethan3500studentsfrom113HRSBschoolsearnedticketsthroughservicetothefirst-everWeDayAtlanticattheHalifaxMetroCentreonWednesdayNovember27.ItwasadayofgreatinspirationenergyandmotivationtobethechangeIthankeveryonewhotookpartinthisamazingdayandIlookforwardtoseeinghowithasempow-eredstudentsandstafftobechangeagentsintheircommunitiesandaroundtheworldClickonthephototohearfromsomeHRSBstudentswhoattendedWeDayAtlantic.SchoolVisitsOneofthebestpartsofmyjobisvisitingschools.Ihavebeento21schoolssincemyappointmentasSuperintendent.IlovewitnessingthegreatworkofstaffandmeetingstudentslikeLevontaeaGrade1studentatBicentennialwholovestoread.Clickontheabovephototoseemoreschoolvisits.Letstalkabout...mathIseetheworldinnumbers.Iaminspiredbypatternsanddesigns.Solvingproblemsthroughlogicandreasonisfuntome.ThatsprobablywhyIloveallthingstodowithmathAsaformermathteacherIknowhowimportantitisforstudentstodevelopstrongskillsinmathematics.Iunderstandthateverystudentrelatestomathdifferentlyandthatthereisnoonesizefitsallapproachtolearningorteachingmath.Iamalsoacutelyawarethatourmathassessmentresultsneedimprovement.Mathisanareathatwillcontinuetorequireourattentionandtargetedsupport.Irecognizethatstudentsarenotperformingaswellaswewouldlikeandcanassureyouthatwearecontinuingoureffortstoimprovemathinstructionandassessmentforalllearners.ItisimportanttonotethattheneedtoimprovestudentachievementinmathematicsisnotjustanHRSBconcernitsaprovincialconcernandanationalconcern.Canadawasamong65countriesparticipatingintheassessmentbytheOrganizationforEconomicCo-operationandDevelopment.FindingsoftheOECDsProgramforInternationalStudentAssessmentorPISAfrom2012werereleasedearlierthismonth.ThisyearinNovaScotiamathteachersareimplementingarevisedcurriculumforstudentsinPrimarytoGrade3andinGrade10.Grades4to6andGrade11willbeimplementedinSeptember2014withGrades7-9andGrade12followinginSeptember2015.ThenewcurriculumhasfewerconceptsateachgradelevelfromGradesPrimaryto6toallowmoretimetofocusondevelopingstrongernumberskills.Thegoalisforstudentstodevelopamorein-depthunderstandingoffewerconceptsasopposedtoacursoryunderstandingofmanyconcepts.Thereisalsoastrongerfocuson21stCenturySkillssuchasproblemsolvingandcommunication.Grade10studentswillalsostudyfinancialmathematicsanessentialskillforourstudents.Thewaystudentsarelearningmathtodayismuchdifferentthanwhentheirparentsguardianswereinschool.Thedaysofmemorizationaregone.Iveheardfromsomeparentsguardianswhosaytheyareunsurehowtheycansupporttheirchildreninmathathome.ThatpromptedmetowriteanarticleforanupcomingissueofOurChildrenmagazineaboutcreatingmath-richenvironmentsathome.Itincludesalistofstrategiestostrengthenunderstandingseeandexploremath.Iencourageyoutoreadandsharethearticlewhenthemagazineispublishedinmid-January.ImconfidentthatwiththecombinedfocusofteachersboardsandtheDepartmentofEducationandEarlyChildhoodDevelopmentEECDalongwiththesupportoffamiliesstudentswillachievebetterresultsinmathematics.Theyrecountingonusalltoimprovetheirsuccesswithmathematics. OnNovember12HRSBsSafeSchoolsCommitteehostedaSafeandCaringSchoolsConferenceforallsecondaryschools.Eachschoolsentateamoffourtheprincipalaguidancecounselorandtwoteachers.Intotal224peopletookpartintheday-longconference.Therewere12presenterswhosharedtheirexpertiseontopicsincludingGenderIdentityexaminingtheissueofgenderidentityinschoolsDigitalCitizenshipdevelopingandnurturingresponsiblerespectfuluseoftechnologyinordertofosterasafeandcaringclassroomengagingalllearnersUnderstandingCulturalProficiencyexploringtheprinciplesofculturalproficiencyandhowitrelatestoprovidingasafeandcaringenvironmentJenniferLlewellynLawProfessoratDalhousieUniversitysSchulichSchoolofLawwasthekeynotespeaker.ThetitleofheraddresswasBuildingSafeandCaringSchoolsthroughaRestorativeApproach.Herspeechprovidedaplatformtobegintheconver-sationonhowtosupportarestorativeapproachinschools.Ms.Llewellynspokeabouthowarestorativeapproachinaschooltakestimeandthatitisawayoflearningthinkingandinteracting.Shehighlightedthatpayingattentiontotherelationshipswithinaschoolandensuringthattheyreflectrespectcareandconcernisessentialinsecuringsafeschools.Overallparticipantsheardthatrestorativeapproacheshelpustoevaluatetheassumptionswemakeandthewayinwhichwetreatoneanotherespeciallywhenconflictandchallengesarise.OverthreedaysinNovemberjuniorhighschoolteachersthroughouttheHRSBgatheredforaday-longconferencecalledInnovationinLearningandTeaching.Thepurposeofthedaywastohelpteachersbecomebetterequippedtouseinnovativeteachingmethodsandtointegratetechnologymoreeffectivelyintheirpractice.ParticipantsattendedakeynoteaddressbyAlReyneraretiredhighschoolprincipalandapart-timelectureratMountSaintVincentUniversitywhospecializesinTechnologyIntegrationand21stCenturyteachingandlearning.Participantschosefoursessionsfromalistof30.SessionsincludediPadsforPhysEdTeachersInteractiveWhiteBoardsAnOverviewSharetheConversationsStrategiestoEngageStudentTalkSupportingStudentswithEnglishasanAdditionalLanguageEALAssistiveTechnologytoSupportStrugglingReadersandWritersThisprofessionallearningexperiencewillinspireteacherstouseinnovativeideasandstrategiestoengagetheirstudents.Itgavesometeachersthecouragetotrynewthingswhileotherswereabletomakeconnectionsandreachoutoraskforsupportastheymakechangesintheirpractice.Followingtheconferencemorethan160participantsreachedouttoourTechnologyIntegrationLeadTeamTILTthroughfeedbackforms.ThisenabledTILTtocontinuetoengagewithparticipantsandprovidefurthersupportaroundthetopicsdiscussedattheconference.Inadditiontothesessionsmorethan20vendorsandinformationsourceswerepresenteachdayinkiosk-stylespaces.Participantswereabletomingleandaskquestionswhileonabreakfromsessions.Itsimportanttonotethattheinstallationofmanagedwifiisnowcompleteinallofourjuniorhighschools.Managedwirelessisalreadyinstalledinallofourhighschools.Elementaryschoolsarenextonthelistasfundingbecomesavailable.OnethingIwilltrywhenIgetbacktomyclassroomisswitchingfromsayinghanditintopublishit.Itsaboutgivingstudentscontrol-ParticipantFindthisreportontheSuperintendentspageonwww.hrsb.ca2Toimprovestudentachievementandpersonalsuccess.Tomaximizeexemplaryteachingpracticestosupporthighqualityinstruction. Providingahighqualityofeducationforeverystudenteveryday3ParticipantsintheLeadershipDevelopmentProgramLDPtookpartinaDiversityManagementRaceRelationsCrossCulturalUnderstandingandHumanRightsRCHinLearningandCulturalProficiencyworkshoponDecember11.Thepurposeoftheworkshopwastohelpcandidateslearnthatprivilegeculturalbackgroundandracearenotdeterminatesofsocialandacademicsuccess.GoalsofthisworkshopincludedevelopinganunderstandingofissuesrelatedtoDiversityManagementandRCHinLearning.IntheworkshopparticipantsfocusedonpoliciesandproceduresrelatedtoRCHinlearningtohaveaclearunderstandingthatRCHpermeatesallpoliciesintheHalifaxRegionalSchoolBoard.Theaimofthesessionwastoincreasecapacitytosupportaculturallyresponsivelearningenvironment.ThesessionwasfacilitatedbytheSchoolAdministrationDepartmentourRCHfacilitatorandourCoordinatorofDiversityManagement.AllparticipantsreceivedacopyofTheCulturalProficiencyJourneyMovingbeyondEthicalBarriersTowardProfoundSchoolChange.Toachieveequitablelearningopportunitiesforallstudents.InJune2012theGoverningBoardmadeamotiontocreateanAboriginalandAfricanNovaScotianANSTeacherTaskForce.ThepurposewastoincreasethenumberofAboriginalandANSqualifiedapplicants.ThetaskforceismadeupofrepresentativesfromEECDcommunitygroupsthatrepresentAboriginalandANSteachersHRSBstaffmembersandmembersfromallotherschoolboardsfromacrosstheprovince.MikeChristieDirectorofHumanResourcesischairingthetaskforce.ThegrouphelditsfirstmeetinginNovemberandasecondmeetingisplannedforJanuary15.Thegoalistomakerecommendationsbeforetheendoftheschoolyear.ThissessionhasgivenmethecouragetoknockthetopofftheboxIvebeenteachinginandatleasthavealookaroundathowIcanstartmakingchanges.-ParticipantThiswasthebestinservicedayinatleast10years.Itwasinteractiveandinspiring.ThekeynoteaddressspoketowhatIfelttechnologycanbeembracedbutitisnottheanswer.ParticipantMorethoughtsfromInnovationinTeachingandLearningparticipants...ProvidingamonthlySuperintendentsReportthatreachesbeyondthewallsoftheBoardChambersisoneofthewaysIamcontributingtothegoalofbuildingengagementsupportandconfidencefortheHRSB.ThisreportwillbepresentedatRegularBoardMeetingseachmonthpostedonthewebsiteTweetedfrommyTwitteraccountaswellastheHRSBsTwitteraccountandprintedoffforthosewhowishtohaveatakeaway.AswellitwillbeawaytojournalourprogresstowardsourStrategicPlangoalscelebrateoursuccessesandsharegoodnewsstories.Iwillincludephotosvideoswhereapplicablelinksandotherinteractivetools.EachmonthIwillaskaquestiononthelastpageofthereport.RespondentscanreplytomedirectlyonTwitter.AttheNovember27RegularBoardMeetingaBoundaryReviewforGrosvenor-WentworthParkElementaryandParkWestwasapproved.Thisreviewprocessaswellasothersinfuturewillincludeadditionalconsultationbeyondwhatpolicycurrentlyrequires.Wehaverecognizedtheneedanddesireforfurtherpublicengagementandcommunityconsultationearlierinthereviewprocess.TobuildengagementsupportandconfidenceinHRSB.
