TheeighthannualAfro-centricconferencewasheldatMountSaintVincentUniversityduringAfricanHeritageMonth.OrganizedbyHRSBstafftheconferencethemewasKujichaguliaLoveYourselfYourCultureYourHeritage.KujichaguliaisaSwahiliwordwhichmeansself-determination.Oneoftheworkshopsfocusedonthetransitionforstudentsfromjuniorhightohighschoolandbeyond.Thiswasanewsessionattheconferenceandthepurposewastoprovidegradeninestudentswithinformationtheywillneedtomakeinformeddecisionsastheygetreadytoleavejuniorhigh.Someofthetopicsincludedinformationondifferenthighschoolcoursessupportsavailablescholarshipsessaysportfoliostheimportanceofmeetingdeadlineshighschoolgraduationrequirementspost-secondaryoptionsfinancesandorganizationalskills.Studentswereactivelyengagedbythepresentersthroughoutthesessionandacopyofthepresentationwascirculatedforfuturereference.ThissessionwasplannedwithinputfromjuniorandseniorhighschoolSupportWorkersandfacilitatedbyDarcelleAdams-FrankSupportWorkerIanDavidAfricanNovaScotianStudentSupportWorkerandSheilaLucasFacilitatorAfricanNovaScotianStudentSupport.Theworkshopwaswellreceivedandwillbeofferedagain.AspecialwordofthankstoMSVUPresidentDr.RamonaLumpkinforhersponsorshipofthevenue.FindthisreportontheSuperintendentspageonwww.hrsb.caSinceOctobercloseto90Grade7teachershavebeenparticipatinginprofessionaldevelopmentfocusedontechnologyintegration.Thegoalofusingtechnologyintheclassroomistoincreasestudentengagementimprovestudentlearningandprovidestudentswiththetoolsandskillstobecreativeworkcollaborativelycommunicateeffectivelyandenhancecriticalthinkingwhilebuildingandmaintaininganawarenessofdigitalcitizenship.TheseteachersattendedPDsessionsinOctoberandJanuaryandwillattendanothersessionattheendofMarchandafinalsessioninMay.BetweenthesesessionstheteachershavebeenenthusiasticallydesigningandpursuingPDwhichaddressesthespecificneedsoftheirteachingassignmentandcurrentskilllevel.Toimprovestudentachievementandpersonalsuccess.Tomaximizeexemplaryteachingpracticestosupporthighqualityinstruction.Thisyearsgrade7IEIEPDhasenabledmetosearchforlearnaboutadaptandapplyinstructionalandassessmentstrategiesinvolvingtechnologyinmyclassroom.BestPDIhaveexperiencedinmycareerThanksfortheopportunity.-ParticipantTheuseoftheiPadhasincreasedlearningengagementofmystudents.Theyareexcitedtoseehowtheirdevicescanbeusedinaneducationalsetting.Iamnolongertheholderofallknowledgeintheclassroombutaparticipantintheirjourneyoflearning.-Participant2
