Elwin_LeRouxHRSB_OcialJanuary2015SuperintendentstotheHalifaxRegionalSchoolBoardProvidingahighqualityeducationforeverystudenteverydayAfricanHeritageMonthRegistrationfor2015-2016Buscluster3PDdaynoschoolforthesestudentsViolaDesmondDaynoschoolBuscluster1PDdaynoschoolforthesestudentsBuscluster2PDdaynoschoolforthesestudentswww.hrsb.ca33SpectacleLakeDriveDartmouthNSB3B1X7902.464.2000ViewtheHRSBcalendaronlineMonthofFebruaryFebruary132015February162015February172015February202015ImportantDatesHowdoyoupreparestudentsforfuturecareersinaworldthatisevolvingasfastasimaginationEverydayteachersareencouragingstudentstoexploretechnologyinavarietyofways.Forstudentsatthehighschoollevelitcouldbeinoneoftheircommunicationsandinformationtechnologycourses.Ourstudentsarelearningaboutcomputerprogrammingmulti-mediaproductionandgraphicdesign.TherearecurrentlyoverthreethousandhighschoolstudentsenrolledinoneofthesecoursesintheHRSB.Atothergradelevelstechnologyisembeddedintotheclassroomandthedailycurriculum.ElementarystudentsareusingtabletsSMARTBoardsandcomputerstoproduceandsharetheirworkwhilemiddleschoolandjuniorhighstudentsarecreatingappsandusingtechnologytodoresearch.Regardlessoftheagegradeorinterestsofourstudentstheyareallusingtechnologytolearn.Studentsareusingavarietyofdevicesandinmanycasestheyarebringingtheirown.BYODorBringYourOwnDevicehasbecomeacommonterminschoolstoday.Incaseswherestudentsdonothaveaccesstothiskindoftechnologyathomeourschoolsworktoensurethereisequalopportunityintheclassroomforuseofschool-owneddevices.FormanyyearstheInformationEconomyInitiativeExtendedhasbeeninplacetoallowconsistentroll-outoftechnologyacrosstheprovince.Thisincludesdevicesandinfrastructureinschoolstargetedtoadierentgradeleveleachyear.ComputersarealsoprovidedtoschoolsbytheProvincialComputerforSchoolsprogram.Teachersarereceivingprofessionaldevelopmenttoenhancetheiruseoftechnologyandessentiallymakechangestotheirteachingpractice.Itisimportanttonotethattheuseoftechnologyintheclassroomhasneverbeentoreplaceexistingresourcesbutinsteaditistocomplimentandenhancethelearningtakingplace.Technologyuseallowsthestudentstohaveaccesstoanothertooltoenhancetheirlearning.Itsnotaboutputtingdevicesinthehandsofstudentsandlettingthemgooontheirown.Itsaboutblendedlearningandmeetingthestudentswheretheyarewhichisinatechnologylledworld.Studentsarenolongerwaitingforcomputerclassthetechnologyisallaroundthem.Teacherswillpresentstudentswithcriticalthinkingopportunitiesandchallengethemtodeterminethebestresourceforresearchorthebesttooltousewhenproducingaproject.OfcoursetheyoerguidancealongthewaybutifastudentchoosestocreateamovietocapturetheirunderstandingofMacBeththeynowhavetheoption.InDecemberwesawthousandsofstudentsacrosstheHRSBengagedintheHourofCode.Thisinternationalinitiativewascreatedtointroduceyoungpeoplearoundtheworldtocomputerscienceandtodispelafewmythsatthesametime.Itisaone-hourintroductiontocodingdesignedtoteachpeopleatallskilllevelsaboutthisrapidlychangingindustry.Globallyover180countriesparticipatedusingtutorialsdeliveredinthirtylanguages.Thelevelofengagementinourclassroomswaselectrifying.ThereweregradetwostudentscreatingFlappyBirdgamesmiddle-schoolstudentsworkingonPlantsvs.Zombiescodeandhighschoolstudentsdevelopingholidaycardswithmovinggraphicsandmusic.Itwasanincredibleexampleofstudentsbeingtuned-intotheirlearning.Weexpectnextyeartohaveevenmorestudentsparticipatingastheenthusiasmcontinuestospread.Aseachyearpasseswewillcontinuetoseetheexpansionoftechnologyinourschoolsandourlivesingeneral.Studentswillbeworkingwithamultitudeofapplicationstolearnabouteverythingfromtheenvironmenttohowthetechnologyitselffunctions.Asasystemwearededicatedtoprovidingahighqualityeducationforeverystudenteveryday.Thisincludespreparingthemforaworldandcareersthataremovingandchangingathigh-speed.Letstalkabout...TechnologyinclassroomsClickonthephotoabovetocheckoutourHourofCodevideo Duringtheirtimeinschoolstudentsaresupportedbymanypeopletoachievesuccess.Asstudentsgrowanddeveloptheirindividualstrengthschallengesandinterestschangeovertimeinresponsetoteachingandlearningopportunitiesbothinandoutoftheclassroom.Theprogramplanningprocessinvolvesateamapproachtoplanappropriateeducationforstudentswhoexperiencechallengesforavarietyofreasons.TheprogramplanningprocessconsistsofeightstagesStage1ScreeningIdenticationStage2ExplorationofInstructionalStrategiesbyClassroomTeachersAdaptationsStage3ReferraltoProgramPlanningTeamMeetingStage4ProgramPlanningTeamMeetingStage5DevelopmentofIndividualProgramPlanStage6ImplementationofIndividualProgramPlanStage7MonitoringofIndividualProgramPlanStage8ReviewofIndividualProgramPlanItisexpectedthatparentsguardiansbeinvolvedthroughouttheprogramplanningprocess.Asmembersoftheprogramplanningteamparentsguardiansprovidevaluableinformationandinsightstothedevelopmentofappropriateprogramplanningfortheirchild.Onceastudenthasbeenidentiedasrequiringadditionalplanningtomeettheirneedstheclassroomteacherusesavailablematerialssupportsandresourcestoexploreavarietyofstrategiestosupportthestudentintheirlearning.Cooperationandcollaborationamongprofessionalsandparentsguardiansareessential.Theidenticationassessmentandprogramplanningprocessmaynotgobeyondthisstageformanystudentsastheirneedsmaybemetthroughadaptationsthatsupporttheminachievingprovincialcurriculumoutcomes.IntheeventthatadaptationsproveinsucientinmeetingastudentsneedstheSchoolPlanningTeamorparentsguardiansmayrequesttheprincipalestablishaprogramplanningteammeetingforthestudent.Teammembersarethosewhohaveresponsibilityforthestudentslearning.Theteammeetingprovidesanopportunityformemberstocometogethertoclarifygivenallavailableinformationthestudentsstrengthsandchallengesandtodecideonfutureactionstobetakenintermsofprogramplanning.TheteamdecideswhetherornottoproceedwithdocumentedadaptationsandorthedevelopmentofanIndividualProgramPlanIPP.WhentheoutcomesofprovinciallyapprovedcurriculummustbechangedoradditionaloutcomesareneededtomeettheneedsofthestudentanIPPbecomesnecessary.ThestudentsprogramplanningteamusesinformationgatheredtowritetheIPP.TeachersimplementthestudentsIPPandcontinuallyassessstudentprogressaccordingtoareasofresponsibility.StudentprogressisroutinelycommunicatedwithparentsguardiansandtheprogramplanningteamisresponsibleforreviewingthestudentsprogresstowardmeetingtheoutcomesoftheIPPandmeetingtodiscusschangeswhennecessary.Theprogramplanningprocessisadynamiccollaborativeapproachtosupportingstudentstoensuretheylearngrowandsucceed.Schoolsworkalongsideprofessionalsparentsguardiansandthestudentstoprovideahighqualityeducationforallstudentseveryday.FindthisreportontheSuperintendentspageonwww.hrsb.caProvincialcurriculumandoutcomesaredevelopedbytheDepartmentofEducationandEarlyChildhoodDevelopmentbasedoncurrenteducationalresearch.Schoolboardsandteachersthenimplementthiscurriculum.Curriculumalignmentisatermusedintheeducationeldwhichessentiallymeansthatthecurriculumdevelopedattheprovinciallevelistaughtintheclassroomandthenthestudentsareassessedonit.Thisismeanttoensureconsistencyacrosstheprovincesoeachstudentislearningthesamematerialandthatstudentsdemonstratetheirunderstandinginmultipleways.InMathforexampleteachersarereceivingprofessionaldevelopmenttosupportcurriculumoutcomesdeterminedbytheDepartmentofEducationandEarlyChildhoodDevelopment.Professionaldevelopmentincludestheopportunityforteacherstohaveconversationswithoneanotherabouttheirunderstandingofthecurriculumhowtoimplementitandhowtoassessstudents.Thecurriculumdocumentistheanchorthatprovidesconsistencyandteachersinturnclearlyoutlineexpectationstostudents.WhyisthisimportantOneexamplewouldbewhenstudentsmovefromjuniorhightohighschooltheycomefrommultipleclassesfromvariousschools.Iftheyhavealllearnedthesameconceptstheywillbebetterpreparedforlearningintheirgrade10mathclasses.Thissupportsstudentsduringgradeandschooltransitionsthroughouttheirschooling.Curriculumalignmentalsoallowsstudentstodeepentheirunderstandingoftheconceptsandtransferthemintoothersubjects.Inkeepingwiththemathexamplestudentsmaybeabletousetheirknowledgeinotherareassuchasphysics.Teachersaretaskedwithaveryimportantjobwhichdoesnotchangefromschooltoschoolorfromregiontoregion.Theyareallexpectedtodeliverthesamecurriculumandassessforthesameoutcomesprovidingourstudentswithhigh-qualityinstruction.Toimprovestudentachievementandpersonalsuccess.Tomaximizeexemplaryteachingpracticestosupporthighqualityinstruction.ProgramPlanningProcessCurriculumAlignment2 3Toachieveequitablelearningopportunitiesforallstudents.TobuildengagementsupportandcondenceinHRSB.AnimportantroleoftheGoverningBoardiscreatingadoptingrevisingandrescindingremovingordeletingpolicies.PoliciesarestatementsofprinciplewhichtheGoverningBoardadoptstooutlineacourseofactionandprovidedirectiontotheSuperintendentandsta.Policiesshouldbebroadenoughtoallowstatoaddressthedierentneedswithintheschoolsystembutspecicenoughtogiveclearguidance.TheGoverningBoardhascreatedaPolicyDevelopmentandReviewCommitteetoleadthisimportantwork.Thecommitteeincludesallboardmembersandholdspublicmeetingseachmonthtoreviewnewandexistingpoliciesandprovidedirectiontosta.ExistingpoliciesaretypicallyreviewedeveryveyearsandGoverningBoardmemberscanbringforwardnewpoliciestobediscussed.Eachtimeapolicyisreviewedthereisaconsultationprocess.Dependingonthenatureofthepolicythisprocesscanbeextensive.OftenSchoolAdvisoryCouncilsreceivecopiesofdraftpoliciesforfeedbackalongwithotherinterestedgroupswhenapplicable.DraftpoliciesarealwaysontheHRSBwebsiteforpublicreviewandfeedback.OncefeedbackhasbeenreceivedandanyfurtherrevisionsaremadethedraftpolicyisbroughtbacktotheCommitteeforreview.Thenalstepisforthepolicytobepubliclydebatedattheregularboardmeeting.Culturallyresponsiveteachingisbasedonusingculturalknowledgepersonalexperienceandlearningstylesofethnicallydiversestudentstomakethelearningmeaningfulforthem.Thisapproachteachestoandthroughthestrengthsofthestudents.Itbecomesaboutthelearnernotjusttheteaching.Culturallyresponsiveteachingincludesthedeliveryofcontentlearningcontextclassroomenvironmentsrelationshipsinstructionandassessment.Itisalensthroughwhichteachersandadministratorsviewtheentireacademicexperienceofeachstudent.InJanuaryHRSBprincipalsvice-principalsandcentralocestaparticipatedinaprofessionaldevelopmentsessionwithDr.KimberlyMcLeoddiscussingculturallyresponsiveteaching.ThegoalwastodevelopanunderstandingofthepurposeandtheleadersroleinimplementingculturallyresponsiveteachingtoensureacademicsuccessforAfricanNovaScotianstudents.Dr.McLeodhasbeenresearchingculturallyresponsiveteachingformanyyearsinherhomestateofTexas.HavingspenthercareerinpubliceducationDr.McLeodhasheldvariouspositionsincludingthatofateachercounselorandadministrator.CurrentlysheistheExecutiveDirectorofAcademicInstructionandProfessoratTexasSouthernUniversityintheCollegeofEducation.ThisprofessionaldevelopmentwastargetedtorespondtotheidentiedacademicandsocialneedsofAfricanNovaScotianstudents.TogetherparticipantstalkedandworkedtoexpandtheirunderstandingandknowledgeofteachingandadministrativepracticestoimproveoutcomesforallstudentsandinparticularAfricanNovaScotianlearners.Dr.McLeodledparticipantsthroughtheorypracticeandculturallyrelevantexperiencesthatempoweredthemwithasetofbeliefsthathasthepotentialtocreatepositiveoutcomesforanentirelearningcommunity.Opportunitieswereprovidedforreectionandmeaningfulconversationsamongpeerswhereideaspracticesbeliefsandfeelingswereallputonthetable.Goingbacktotheirschoolstheadministratorswillsharewiththeirstanewperspectivesandwillcontinuetogeneratevaluablediscussionandmakechangestoensureschoolsareresponsivetothelearningstylesoftheirstudents.Theimplementationofculturallyresponsiveteachingsupportsstudentachievementbyadaptingschoolstothestudentsandtheircommunitiesandensuringteachingstylesmatchstudentslearningstyles.Itrequireseducatorstohavehighexpectationsforalloftheirstudentsandtoteachstudentsinamannerthatisrelevanttotheirlives.Ithighlightstheneedforalleducatorstobelieveintheirstudentsabilitiesregardlessofraceorsocio-economicstatus.ClickheretovisitthepolicysectionofourwebsitePicturedclockwiseDr.KimberlyMcLeodpresentationparticipantssharingideasCulturallyResponsiveTeachingPolicyDevelopmentReview Lightso.GreenonEnergyProjectUpdateAnotherprojectundertheLightso.GreenonprogramhasbeencompletedthistimeatMillwoodHighSchoolinLowerSackville.Anewpelletredboilerheatingsystemhasbeeninstalledtoreplacetheagingoilfurnaceattheschool.Theschoolhadpreviouslyexperiencedinconsistentheatthroughoutthebuildingnottomentiontheinecienciescreatedbyoperatinganagingsystem.Behindtheschoolsitsalargesilosimilartoonesyouwouldseeonafarmtoholdgrain.Filledwithlocallyproducedpelletsthesilofeedsthesystemthroughanauger.Whenacallforheatcomesfromsensorsinthebuertankwhichislikeahugehotwatertanktheboilerfeedspelletsfromthesilothroughtheaugerstotheboiler.Anigniterlightsthepelletsandtheblowerfansboththefrontoftheboilerandtheexhausttoprovidetherightoxygenlevelforcleanburning.Whenthemaximumtemperatureismettheboilerslowlycoolsdownuntilitshutso.Thesystemrestartsitselfwhenneededtokeepthetemperatureintheschoolconsistent.Pelletsystemsburnecientlyandareveryclean.Theschoolexpectstoburnapproximately180tonnesofpelletsleavinglessthanonetonneofash.Notonlyisthesystemcleanbutitisalsoexpectedtosave40000inheatingcostseachyearDidyouknowUNESCOhasdeclared2015throughto2025theInternationalDecadeforPeopleofAfricanDescentJusticeRecognitionDevelopment.InrecognitionoftheseeventsthethemeforAfricanHeritageMonth2015willbeJusticePeoplePlacesandEvents.ClickheretovisitthewebsiteIn2014theHRSBprocessed33FreedomofInformationandProtectionofPrivacyles.SierraSparksagrade11studentatPrinceAndrewHighSchoolinDartmouthwasarecipientofa2014GovernmentofCanadaHistoryAwardforheressaytitledToolateforAfricville.HeressaywassubmittedundertheGovernmentsandResponsibilitycategoryanddiscussedthehistoryofAfricvilleandtheexpropriationofresidents.ThisawardhonoursstudentsandteacherswhoshowaninterestinCanadianhistoryandiscoordinatedbytheMinisterofCanadianHeritageandOcialLanguagesoceinOttawa.AlsofromPrinceAndrewHighSchoolTimHalmanapoliticalscienceteacherwasawardedthe2014EverydayPoliticalCitizenAwardbySamaraCanada.ThisnationalawardcelebratespoliticalsciencerolemodelsinthecommunitywhosharetheirpassionforCanadianpoliticswithothers.Mr.HalmanwasnominatedbyRobertChisholmMemberofParliamentforDartmouthColeHarbourforhisworkwithstudentsnotonlyintheclassroombutthroughouttheschoolcommunity.CongratulationsClickonthephotosabovetocheckoutavideoaboutthenewboilersystemLeftMs.KeramarisHistoryteacherSierraSparksBelowMichaelMacMillanCo-FounderofSamaraCanadaTimHalmanMPRobertChisholmFindthisreportontheSuperintendentspageonwww.hrsb.ca4FacesofHRSB
