Elwin_LeRouxHRSB_OcialFebruary2015SuperintendentstotheHalifaxRegionalSchoolBoardProvidingahighqualityeducationforeverystudenteverydayMarchBreaknoclassesP-9AssessmentEvaluationDaynoclassesforstudentsP-9onlyTerm3BeginsforP-9www.hrsb.ca33SpectacleLakeDriveDartmouthNSB3B1X7902.464.2000ViewtheHRSBcalendaronlineMarch16-20inclusiveMarch272015March302015ImportantDatesItsbeenaparticularlypoignantAfricanHeritageMonthinNovaScotiathisyear.Asanentireprovincewehavecometogethertohonourcelebrateandlearnaboutoneofourveryown.IfyouhadnotheardViolaDesmondsnamebeforethismonthImsureyouhavenow.Ms.Desmondsstoryhasbecomeareal-lifeNovaScotiahistorylessonforallofus.ShehasbeenreferredtoasCanadasRosaParks.HoweverMs.DesmondsstoryofrefusingtogiveupherseatinthedesignatedwhitesonlysectionofaNewGlasgowmovietheatretookplacenineyearsbeforeRosaParkstookastandagainstsegregationonanAlabamabus.Ms.DesmonddidntwalkintotheRoselandtheatrethatnightin1946knowingthelegacythatshewouldeventuallyleave.Shealsowouldneverhavepredictedthatin2015aprovincialholidaywouldbenamedinherhonourthathertalewouldbetoldbyteachersinclassroomsthroughoutthisprovinceandthatstudentsofallageswouldbecelebratingherlifeandlegacythroughartliteracyandhistoryprojects.Althoughtheyoungentrepreneurmayneverhaveimaginedtheimpactshewouldhaveasatrainedteachershewouldlikelybeveryproudofthelastingteachablemomentsherpersonalbattleagainstracismhascreated.LikemanyHRSBschoolsDartmouthHighheldaceremonytopaytributetoMs.DesmondaspartoftheirAfricanHeritageMonthcelebrations.Thisstudent-ledeventhonouredAfricanrootsthroughsongdancedrummingpoetryandawaterlibationceremony.Toseeashortvideoofsomeoftheseperformancesclickonthephotobelow.Whatwasmosttouchingaboutthiscelebrationisthat89-year-oldWandaRobsonMs.Desmondsyoungestsisterattendedtheevent.StudentspresentedalargemuralofMs.DesmondthattheycreatedintheirAfricanCanadianStudiesclass.ForweekstheclasshadbeenlearningaboutMs.DesmondandherghtwiththeNovaScotiagovernmentthatwouldultimatelychangethecourseofhistory.Tobeabletoactuallymeetthesisterofthewomanwhoseactionsalmostsevendecadesagohadadirectandmeaningfulimpactontheirliveswasanincredibleexperienceforstudents.IsawthelooksofprideonstudentsfaceswhenMs.Robsonsignedhernametotheirmural.Thishands-onreal-lifelessoninlocalhistoryisthetypeoflearningthattrulyengagesstudentsandisthetypeofexperiencetheywillrememberforever.TheHalifaxRegionalSchoolBoardhasmadeitaprioritytoimprovetheachievementofallAfricanNovaScotianstudents.In2014wewereabletoreportontheachievementresultsforstudentswhoself-identiedasAfricanNovaScotianforthersttime.LiteracyassessmentdataforstudentsinGrades3and6indicatedthatHRSBisatorabovetheprovincialaverageinalmostallcomponentsofreadingandwriting.Whentheseresultsweredisaggregateditbecameapparentthatthereisanachievementgapbetweenthosewhoself-identifyasAfricanNovaScotianlearnersandtheoverallboardresults.SowhatarewedoingtohelpclosethisachievementgapResearchshowsthatwhenstudentsfeelconnectedtotheirlearningachievementimproves.Thatswhywehavemadeacommitmenttotrainingourteachingstaandouradministrativestainculturallyrelevantpedagogy.Thatswhyoneofourstrategicgoalsistomaximizeexemplaryteachingpracticestosupporthighqualityinstruction.Youcanlearnmoreaboutbothofthesecommitmentsandhowweareworkingtowardsachievingourgoalsinthisreport.Closingtheachievementgapforalllearnerswilltaketimebutwewillkeeppushingourselvestogetitright.AswelearnedfromViolaDesmondshistorylessonnogreatchangecomeswithoutdedicationanddetermination.Letstalkabout...HonouringViolaDesmond Researchhighlightsthatearlydetectionandinterventionarevitaltoastudentsliteracysuccess.ThatswhytheHRSBiscommittedtosupportingfocusedliteracyinstructiontostudentsinearlyelementary.StudentsinGradesPrimaryto2whohaveneededmoreguidancewithreadinghavebeenreceivingadditionalsupportssinceSeptember2011.NowtheComprehensiveEarlyLiteracySupportModelasdevelopedbyHRSBstaisexpandingintoGrade3.ByMarch2015principalsGrade3classroomteachersandresourceteachersfromallofourelementaryschoolswillhaveattendedprofessionaldevelopmentsessionsonimplementingthemodelintoGrade3.BywayofbackgroundHRSBsComprehensiveEarlyLiteracySupportModelisdesignedtopromotecontinuedandsustainedliteracyprogressforallEnglishandFrenchImmersionprogramstudentsfromGradesPrimaryto3.OurprogramisalignedwiththeDepartmentofEducationandEarlyChildhoodDevelopmentsComprehensiveEarlyLiteracySupportStrategyformerlyknownasSucceedinginReading.EarlyliteracysupportinGrade3isdesignedtohelpthosestudentswhoareapproachingclassroombenchmarksbutareonthecuspofdevelopingadeepercomprehensionofwhattheyarereading.AccordingtotheCanadianEducationStatisticsCouncil2009ifastudentisabletomeettheexpectedliteracyoutcomesbytheendofGrade3thereisahigherlikelihoodthatheshewillcontinuetoprogressandgraduatewithhisherpeers.Grade3literacysupportisledbytheresourceteacherbutisasharedresponsibilitywiththeclassroomteacher.Italsoinvolvesstudentsintheirownlearning.Sometimesallittakesisaconversationwiththestudenttoidentifychallengessolveproblemsanddevelopthenextstepsintheirlearning.SowhatdoesitlooklikewhenaclassroomteacherconnectswiththeresourceteachertosupportastudentClickonthephotobelowtolearnmorefromthisGrade3teacheratSouthdale-NorthWoodsideElementary.HowoftenwillGrade3studentsreceiveliteracysupportCurrentdataindicatesthatstudentswhoreceivemorethanthreelessonsperweekmakegreaterprogressandaremorelikelytomeetyear-endbenchmarksthanstudentswhoreceivethreeorfewerlessonsperweek.Thatswhyresourceteachersareexpectedtoprovideasmanylessonsperweekaspossiblewithaminimumexpectationofthree45-minutelessonsperweek.Weknowthateverychildlearnsdierently.Toensurethatweareteachingliteracyinawaythatisrelevanttothelivesandbackgroundofeachstudentresourceteacherspurposefullyselectreadingandwritingmaterialsthatareengagingandculturallyreectiveoftheirstudents.Overallourgoalistodeveloppowerfulreaderswritersandthinkers.Withasolidfoundationofliteracyweknowthatstudentsaremorelikelytobecomelifelonglearnersandachievepersonalsuccessatschoolandinthecommunity.FindthisreportontheSuperintendentspageonwww.hrsb.caTherearecountlessexamplesofexemplaryteachingpracticesthroughouttheHalifaxRegionalSchoolBoard.ForTerrySampsonanAfricanCanadianStudiesteacheratDartmouthHighitsaboutbringinghistorytolifeforhisstudents.RecentlyMr.SampsonusedacreativeandcollaborativeapproachtoteachhisstudentsaboutViolaDesmond.HeinvolvedmembersofthecommunityinvitedDesmondssistertohisclassandinfusedartandliteracywithhistory.TheresultSeeforyourselfbyclickingonthephotototheleft.Toimprovestudentachievementandpersonalsuccess.Tomaximizeexemplaryteachingpracticestosupporthighqualityinstruction.2 3Toachieveequitablelearningopportunitiesforallstudents.TobuildengagementsupportandcondenceinHRSB.InJanuarymembersoftheGoverningBoardandseniorstametwithTimMerrytolookatwaystheHRSBcouldseizeopportu-nitiestoinvolvepeopleinparticipatorydecisionmaking.TimisalocalexpertonthetopicofengagementandledthehighlysuccessfulprocessforthenewHalifaxCentralLibrary.DuringthesessionsTimandhisteamledusthroughaseriesofquestionsincludingWherecanweapplyengagementforthegreatestimpactHowdoesengagementhelpuseducatekidsbetterHowcouldengagementimproveourworkwithintheHRSBAsaschoolboardtherearemanyopportunitiestoengagepeopleonimportantmatters.Someprocesseshaveengagementcomponentsincludedinthembuttrueengagementextendsfarbeyondtheapplicationofpolicies.Thisisaboutaphilosophy.Itsaboutcollectingadiversityofperspectivesfrommanyvoices.Itsaboutbeingopentohavingdicultconversations.Itsaboutgatheringthoughtsofthosewhoaremostimpacted.Itsaboutbuildingrelationshipsandtrust.Itsaboutlisteningbeforeacting.Onethingthatstoodoutthroughtheconversationsistheimportanceofbeingtrulycommittedtoameaningfulengagementprocess.Ifanorganizationonlyengagespeopleasamatterofprocessittypicallydoesntwork.Peopleneedknowwearegenuinelyinterestedintheirideasandthatwewillintegratewhatwehavelearnedintoourdecision-making.Thisdoesntmeanwecandoeverythingpeoplesuggestbutweneedtosetclearparametersatthestartoftheprocessandprovideparticipantswithaclearsenseonhowtheycancontribute.SowheredowegofromhereItsclearthatwehavemoretolearn.Timhasbeeninvaluableinprovidinguswithadviceonhowwemightconsidermovingforward.Ononethingwecanbesureweneedtochangeourapproach.Thepracticeofpresentinganddefendingneedstoevolveintosomethingmorealignedwithinvolvingandintegrating.Itsexcitingtothinkoftheopportunitieswehavetoengageourcommunities.Thewisdomofmanywillleadtomoreinformeddecision-making.BetterdecisionsshouldincreaseengagementandultimatelybuildsupportandcondenceintheHRSB.ClickheretoviewthemuralcreatedduringtheGoverningBoardandseniorstasessiononengagement.Whenstudentsaretrulyengagedlearningishappening.Forstudentstobefullyengagedtheinstructioninsidetheclassroomneedstoreectwhotheyareoutsideofschool.Culturallyresponsiveteachingisanengagementstrategythatempowersallstudentsfromallracesculturalgenderlinesandsocio-economicstatus.Itswhenteachersvalueallchildrensculturalwaysoflearningandincorporatethoselearningstylesintothewaytheyteach.Itswhenteachersusestudentseverydaylivedexperiencesandintereststocreateengaginglearningactivitiestoteachthecurriculum.Whenthoselivedexperiencesandlearningstylesarevaluedinstructionbecomestrulymeaningfulforstudents.ThecomponentsofCulturallyRelevantPedagogyareunderstandingtheculturallearningstylesofyourstudentsandmoreimportantlyunderstandingthatthestudentslearningstylesmaybedierentthantheteachershavinghighexpectationsforallstudentsregardlessofracialandsocio-economicbackgroundscreatinglearningactivitiesthatarerelevanttothestudentslivesandoutcomesbaseditisthedeliveryofinstructionthatisdierentiatedandnotthecontentofthecurriculumandusingeectiveclassroomassessmenttoguideinstruction.Partofunderstandingstudentsculturallearningstylesisknowingthecultureofthestudents.Asteacherslearntounderstandthecultureoftheirstudentstheyarebetterequippedtomatchtheirinstructiontothewaystudentslearn.HRSBProgramandSchoolAdministrationstahasbegunprofessionaldevelopmentinCulturallyRelevantpedagogy.Therstsessionallowedparticipantstoreectontheirpersonalbeliefsandhowthosebeliefsimpactstudentlearning.Participantsalsogainedanunderstandingthatregardlessofracialcultureandsocio-economicbackgroundallstudentscanreachbenchmarksandbeacademicallysuccessful.Theprofessionaldevelopmentonculturallyresponsiveteachinghasgeneratedgreatconversationandenthusiasm.Teachershavealreadycommentedonhowtheirapplicationofculturallyresponsiveteachingisbeginningtopaydividendsthroughincreasedstudentengagement.-IvanSkeetePrincipalBicentennialSchoolIamexcitedaboutgettingtobecreativeandworkingwithmystudentsandtheteamofcreativepeoplearoundmetodesignexperiencesthatwilleffectivelyteachoutcomestomystudents.-LauraPennyTuckGrade4TeacherSt.Josephs-AlexanderMcKaySchoolCulturallyresponsiveteachingismakingasignificantdifferenceatRockingstone.Theprocesshasallowedstafftolinktheprovincialoutcomestolearningactivitiesbuiltaroundtheinterestsandbackgroundsofourstudents.Thishasincreasedengagementandacademicsuccess-SteveGallagherPrincipalRockingstoneHeightsquotes
