Last year alone, more than 1000 new students arrived in our schools; 500 of those children were from Syria. Schools have done (and continue to do) an outstanding job in creating welcoming and inclusive school communities for newcomer students and their families. Culturally Relevant Pedagogy (CRP) is a strategy HRSB uses to ensure all students are provided with equitable learning opportunities. Before learning can begin, newcomers must feel welcomed and valued (including their languages) to ensure a sense of belonging. Click here for an example of how students at Bedford South welcomed their new peers upon arrival last January (2016). Sonja Grcic-Stuart is HRSB’s English as an Additional Language (EAL) Consultant. In this video, she describes how students acquire English as an Additional Language, how schools are welcoming new students and their families and what we are all gaining from having newcomers in our classrooms. How is the principle of inclusion influencing new school design? With each new school, planners and architects are deliberate in creating safe and inclusive learning environments for both students and staff. Darrell MacDonald is the Director of Education Facilities Project Services with the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal. In this video, he describes some of the design features at the new Dartmouth South Academy that promote safety and inclusivity for all. Similar features will be implemented in each of the four new schools under construction. Further information can be found in this New School Construction Update, presented by the Director of Operations at the Committee of the Whole meeting on January 11, 2017.
