6 Goal 4: To Build engagement, support and confidence in HRSB How is supplementary funding extending music and fine arts to students throughout HRSB? Thanks to municipal taxpayers and supplementary education funding, more students in more schools in more communities now have increased access to arts and music. What’s been going on so far this year? The list is long! Here are just a FEW of the highlights: Elementary students in the Halifax West Family of Schools now have the opportunity to participate in drama classes where they are introduced to improv basics and drama skills. Students are building up to short performances, improv games, dramatic readings, mannequin challenges and more. Two new board-wide drama clubs are about to start: a junior high drama club that brings artists to schools, and a weekly high school drama club that is open to all students across the HRSB. The Great HRSB-Wide Drama Club for students in Grades 9-12 starts on November 9 from 7-8:30 at Dartmouth High School. All interested students need to do is show up and be ready to learn. They’ll play theatre games, develop confidence, stage presence and, most importantly, have fun! The pottery lab is up and running full time and so far, several classes have taken advantage of the pottery workshops. The pottery lab is available to be booked by all HRSB schools for a two-session workshop. At Shatford Memorial, the Fine Arts Specialist recently worked with a class to build life-sized human bodies using chicken wire and paper mache. The bodies will be used to help students demonstrate an awareness of the digestive system. At Tantallon Senior Elementary, the Fine Arts Specialist is helping students create a whole-school mural project in the cafeteria. All students will have participated in painting the background. Colour and details will be added in the coming months. Fine Arts Specialists are hard at work doing even more projects like those above in the Cole Harbour, J.L. Ilsley, and Prince Andrew family of schools. It’s an exciting year for the arts in the HRSB! Follow @HRSBFineArts and @HRSBmusic for regular updates.
