2 www.hrsb.ca continued from page 1 this question: how can we mobilize and foster new pedagogies for deep learning in schools and leverage the power of digital technologies? In this movement, students are engaged in deeper level learning and in developing the skills to be lifelong learners, as well as creative, connected and collaborative problem solvers. We are starting with two schools: St. Joseph A. MacKay and Sir Charles Tupper. Teachers from these schools will participate in specialized professional learning in Toronto next month. They, along with other HRSB teaching staff, will also be taking part in a PD session at HRSB May 16 and 17. In addition, the third public meeting to discuss the future of schools in the Auburn Drive and Cole Harbour District High areas will be held on May 17. The School Options Committee (SOC) will put forward recommendations for discussion. Everyone is welcome. Finally, I am excited to share some fabulous stories of teaching and learning from the past month. Under Goal 1, you’ll find out about a junior high English Language Arts unit that has Grade 8 students cooking up a number of real-world skills, thanks to the collaboration of a teacher and a literacy coach. In Goal 2, students in the Learning Centre at Sackville Heights Junior High demonstrate the Functional Life Skills System, which helps prepare students transition from school to community. In Goal 3, some students in Grades 5 and 6 who attended a special event hosted by the International Students Association at Mount Saint Vincent University will share how they marked the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. In Goal 4, you’ll get construction updates on the new Dartmouth South Academy and Halifax Peninsula South schools. As always, please continue to watch the #SeeWhatImLearning hashtag on Twitter to see what’s happening in many of our schools and classrooms. The lessons that students, teachers and principals are sharing with the world are awesome! Elwin Of note...
