Heather Hughes-Leck and nominator Anne Carlos 7 Goal 4: To Build engagement, support and confidence in HRSB What’s in a name? Residents of Eastern Passage, Cow Bay and Shearwater have an opportunity to recommend a name for the area’s new high school. The Eastern Passage School Naming Committee is accepting electronic and written submissions until Monday, June 5. All submissions will be reviewed by the committee, who will then present a list of up to three recommended names to the HRSB for final review and selection. Electronic submissions can be submitted here. Auburn / CHDH School Review The third public meeting to discuss the future of schools in the Auburn Drive / Cole Harbour District High areas took place on May 17. Members of the School Options Committee (SOC) presented a number of options for public discussion. To view these options, click here. Special thanks to members of the SOC who spent countless evenings pouring over information from the Long-Range Outlook. I recognize that this was not an easy task. Thank you for your dedication and commitment to your community, and especially to the children who do, or will, attend these schools. You have done an outstanding job! I look forward to receiving the SOC report in the next few weeks. Long-Range Outlook Update I am pleased to present our 2017-18 Long-Range Outlook (LRO). It is now available online and will soon be in Halifax Public Libraries. The LRO is an overview of all schools within the board’s jurisdiction. All school boards in Nova Scotia are required to provide information in the form of a public document about the current and developing situation of their schools, as well as the programs and services that are offered. The LRO also includes a section for each Family of Schools called Future Considerations. This section contains a summary of factors such as enrollment, use of space, programming concerns and facility condition. Information provided in the LRO gives SOCs and school communities what they need to have informed discussions about the future of their schools. Staff will also refer to the LRO to develop recommendations to the Governing Board on future processes such as school reviews, boundary reviews, grade configurations and capital construction requests. Based on the information provided in the 2017-18 LRO, board staff have identified potential school reviews for future consideration by the Governing Board in this chart.
