Superintendent’s REPORT to the Halifax Regional School Board 33 Spectacle Lake Drive Dartmouth, NS., B3B 1X7 902.464.2000 @Elwin_LeRoux @HRSB_Official Providing a high quality education for every student every day IMPORTANT DATES: June 28: Assessment & Evaluation Day for High School (no classes) June 29: Assessment & Evaluation Day for P-12 (no classes) June 2017 June 30: Last Day of School Report Cards Home August 30: Late Registration Day September 5: Organization Day (no classes) September 6: Professional Development Day for Staff (no classes) September 7: First Day of School for Students! It has been a year like no other! The past ten months have presented many challenges that stretched each of us in different ways. As I reflect on the year that was, I can’t help but think of Thomas Monson’s quote, “We cannot direct the wind, but we can adjust our sails.” This year, a number of circumstances required each of us to adjust our sails in order to navigate through new, different and uncharted waters. The seas weren’t always smooth, but as they say, smooth seas never made for a skillful sailor. While this year’s journey is about to come to an end, I know that the lessons learned along the way will help determine our way forward. Throughout the ups, downs and uncertainties our system faced this year, I know that staff at every level in the organization held strong to HRSB’s mission to provide a high quality education for every student every day. Why? Our students are our why. Their success is our destination. And while that destination will remain the same for next year’s journey, we’ll adapt and replot our course as we go, always in response to our students’ needs. I am confident that students, their families and staff members will feel a difference in our system this fall. We anticipate that a number of new supports and resources will be added which will have a direct impact on student learning. Class caps will be extended to Grades 7 through 12. Several new positions will be filled. It’s actually a very exciting time for HRSB, and if you know someone who is looking to add themselves to our world of learning, be sure to point them in our direction. We’re hiring! Our Human Resource Services Department is currently working on filling hundreds of positions. Yes, hundreds! So far this June, we have posted more than 880 jobs. Overall, HRSB employs more than 9,000 full-time, part- time and casual employees. We also maintain casual pools (substitute lists) for many school-based positions to provide short-term coverage to schools when regular staff members are away. In addition to teachers, these positions include custodians, educational program assistants, Excel staff, library support specialists, lunch monitors, speech language pathologists, psychologists and school secretaries. Postings are updated every Wednesday at 4:00 p.m., so be sure to check our site on a regular basis and spread the word! Current job opportunities can be found at www.myhrsb.ca/jobs until the end of June and then again beginning on August 23, and continuing weekly thereafter. If you know someone who is looking to work with the Halifax Regional School Board, now is the time to apply. Not only are we preparing for the upcoming school year, our Governing Board is currently in the tendering process to find a company to lead the process of creating a new strategic plan. This comprehensive plan will map out and guide our journey over the next four years. The process is expected to start in September. At the provincial level, a new Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development (EECD) has been appointed. I offer my sincere congratulations to The Honourable Zach Churchill who was sworn in last week.
