Superintendent’s Report to the Halifax Regional School Board 33 Spectacle Lake Drive Dartmouth, NS., B3B 1X7 902.464.2000 @Elwin_LeRoux @HRSB_Official Providing a high quality education for every student every day IMPORTANT DATES: February 1-28 Registration Month February 1 Assessment & Evaluation Day (no classes, High School only) January 2018 February 2 Second Semester Begins (High School) February 12-16 Report Cards Home (High School) February 19 Mona Louise Parsons Heritage Day (no classes) March 12-16 March Break (no classes) The first month of 2018 arrived with a storm that caused widespread power outages across the province. During the height of the severe weather event, more than 140,000 customers were without power, including 100 schools in the Halifax Regional School Board. A wintery Nor’ Easter is to be expected at this time of year. Near hurricane-force winds and torrential rain in January, however, made for a strange and interesting mix. All schools were closed on January 4 and 5. When the decision is made to cancel schools at 5:30 a.m., I know that starts a very long day for many employees whose job it is to ensure that our buildings are safe, secure and ready for students to learn. The work of our maintenance staff, our caretakers and our custodians is essential to our system, not only during the winter months, but every day of the year. I offer my sincere thanks to those employees who went to work during a system-wide closure to check on the status of schools. Making the decision to cancel school due to inclement weather is never easy. As outlined here, that decision is made after consulting AMEC weather service, meteorologists, municipal and provincial transportation staff as well as our student transportation provider. This season, along with any notice of cancelation, the rationale behind the day’s decision is being posted. We have heard from many who say they appreciate this information. In addition, there is a new link for those who wish to share their opinion on the day’s decision. Cancellations delayed the opening of the brand new Dartmouth South Academy until January 8. This is a remarkable space that was entirely designed with student-centred learning at the forefront. What a fantastic time it is to be a student in this school! Find out what Dartmouth South students think of their new space in a video under Goal 3 of this report. Island View High School will be the next new school to open in September 2018. September isn’t that far off – registration starts in a week! This is a critical time to gather the information needed to accurately prepare for a successful opening. Please remind families with young children, families who are moving or new families to the area to visit their neighbourhood school to register this February. Our updated Welcome to Primary resource, featuring a brand new video called A Day in the Life of a Primary Student, is now online and ready to be shared. All other information about registering for school can be found at www.hrsb.ca/registration. As we continue to plan for September, our Human Resources team is actively recruiting staff for next year by attending a number of career fairs in Nova Scotia and beyond. In November, HRSB was represented at a career fair in Toronto. This month, we can be found at a number of universities throughout Atlantic Canada, including St. FX on January 22, UNB Fredericton on January 25/26, Mount Saint Vincent on January 27, Université de Moncton on February 14 and Memorial University in Corner Brook on May 14/16. Please direct any teachers who are interested in working with us to Careers@HRSB. My first report of 2018 focuses on student-centered learning. Inside, you’ll find stories about encouraging student voice in literacy through a restorative approach, physical space design that promotes equitable learning and student choice, as well as fostering positive home and school relationships. We’ll also highlight another one of our amazing partners, Dalhousie Dentistry, who meets students’ dental needs in their very own school! February is African Heritage Month!
