How do I register my child for school in HRCE?

I want my child to be registered for French instruction. How do I register for French Immersion?
- Information on the French language programs can be found here.
- The entry point for Early French Immersion is grade primary, in designated schools.
- The entry point for Late French Immersion is Grade 7, in designated schools.
I want my child to go to a different school. How can I submit an out-of-area request?
- Students must first be registered for the school catchment area of their home address. You can confirm that here.
- Following this, the Out-Of-Area Request can be submitted for a school outside of their school catchment area. The form can be found here.
We are divorced and we have a shared custody agreement. How do we select a primary address for our child to determine their school catchment? How can my child travel to school from either parent’s home?
- Parents who share custody can choose one parent’s home address for their child’s address on the registration form. This will be the child’s address listed for PowerSchool.
- Regarding bussing, where the child will leave and return to both parent’s address throughout the school week, both addresses must be eligible for bussing. Eligibility can be found here.
- After the registration form has been processed, this arrangement can be communicated to the transportation team by calling 902-431-4723 or transportation@hrce.ca.
I want to register my child for school. How do I know what grade they should be in, based on their birth date?
- Students are placed in the grade level according to their year of birth. Children born in 2022 can register for the upcoming September 2026 start for Pre Primary. Children born in 2021 can register for Pre Primary or Primary for the September 2026 start.
How can I request a Letter of Enrolment? How can I request a letter of Acceptance?
- A Letter of Enrolment can be issued free of charge, from the main office of the school if the student is currently attending and is only for the current school year.
- A Letter of Acceptance can be issued by the International Department for a fee based on the parent’s immigration documents. These are issued for students that are not currently in the country/not attending school. These are also issued if the parent immigration permits are in process or incomplete.
Registration for 2026-27 is now available.
Registration is now open for the 2026-27 school year to ensure appropriate resources are in place for September. All registrations and updates for school are completed through the online portal, PowerSchool Enrollment.
Children born in 2021 are eligible for Pre-primary or Primary and children born in 2022 are eligible for Pre-Primary in September 2026.
To register, you will need to create an account using a valid email address after choosing one of the available forms.
What You Need to Register
1. Verify your neighbourhood school. If the school you want your child to attend is outside of your neighbourhood, you must contact apply for an out-of-area transfer. Applications for out-of-area for the 2026-27 school year will open on April 1, 2026. Learn more here. In the meantime, you must still register online for your home school.
2. Make sure you have the following documents in electronic form (image, pdf or Word document):
- Proof of Identity/Age (one of: birth certificate, passport, immigration papers, or legal adoption papers) if you are new to HRCE
- Proof of home address (a recently dated official government or utility document with your current address that includes your name and date, such as water bill, power bill, internet bill, home fuel bill, a tax receipt, property assessment, a residential lease agreement or a mortgage contract)
Please note: If your child is a non-resident, immigrant or refugee, further documentation related to your status must also be provided during this process.
